Sacramento, California – Legislators in California have approved legislation prohibiting the use of reusable plastic bags at retail establishments, including grocery shops, in a historic move to reduce plastic pollution. The new legislation, which targets reusable plastic bags that contribute significantly to landfill garbage and environmental degradation even if they are made for many uses, was passed by both the Assembly and the Senate with overwhelming majorities.

The law requires grocery and retail establishments to stop selling reusable plastic bags and to start stocking paper, cloth, or other biodegradable alternatives. Retailers who do not follow the new regulations will be penalized, guaranteeing that the ban is strictly enforced.

The ruling has been greeted by environmental advocacy groups as a major win in the fight against plastic waste.
